Balboa Park, San Diego...

Another great day in California, and time for another tour.... today's target, Balboa Park, The Jewel of San Diego!
Just a quick note on the blog from the other night, the one with the pictures of the GMC Motorhome in our Park. Judy's Brother Bob has one to be restored, and he tells us in an email they were only made for a couple of years in the mid 70's, and that his is a 1977 model.... I still think they are kind of neat!
We took the shuttle bus from our Resort to Balboa Park, and while we were waiting for the bus by the fountain, Judy got this duck out for a swim!

Balboa Park is a great spot. It is a 1,600 acre park in the middle of San Diego. The City has spent big money developing this area and it shows. It all started back in 1915 when San Diego was host for the San Diego/Panama World Expo. San Diego built all these buildings for the Expo which was a big success and lasted 2 years. So these building are now 95 years old, and the City has spent a lot of money fixing them up so they last another 100 years.

The buildings are great!

I found this tree in the middle of it all....There are flower gardens all over the place...

Lots of fountains and public areas....

We went into the San Diego Museum of Man...

There was a section on robots, and Judy met a famous one.... C 3Po
This was a big display and research project, on how the world was populated in the beginning... It all started in Africa and moved out from there... they have tracked it all...

This is the Museum of Man from the outside!

We found a great place to eat our picnic lunch... lots of people around the whole park!

We went to this area of the park where they have a bunch of buildings, and each country of the world, other than CANADA, has taken a building and opened it to the public and give out free food. We travelled the world and had a second lunch! It was great. Today the focus country was Iran.
There is a free trolley that will take you all around the park....

All these people below are travelling the world and having lunch again with us!
Scotland was giving out shortbread, USA gave out hot dogs... Iran gave out free homemade candy that was real good...Don't know what China was giving out... We had potato cakes from Ireland... Cinnamon rolls from somewhere....????.... it was great! These are Iranian Dancers getting ready to entertain....

I thought Germany would be giving out free beer, but no.....

This was an Iranian band playing in the open... they were not bad....

In 1915 they also build this incredible outdoor Pipe Organ. They still use it today, and every Sunday at 2:00 p.m. is a free concert in the park. There was a children's choir singing when we got there, and then we stayed for some of the organ concert. It was great!

Hope this gives you an idea of what Balboa Park is all about. There are countless museums, Theatres, things to do... you have to go to experience it, and you need about a week to see it all.

All in all, a great day!

Till tomorrow....
